A recent Washington Post poll found that 9 out of 10 people are not offended by the Washington Redskins name. The survey was done by 504 Native Americans nationwide. The newly found information reiterated a previous one that was done back in 2004, which had similar results. It can be assumed that the same results would apply for other team mascots with Native backgrounds.
This issue is not only in professional sports. In fact, there are at least 2,129 high school’s that have a Native American mascot. But, for the most part, these schools are facing no backlash on their names. Of the 2,000 plus schools, the majority of them are located in the midwest, where there is a much smaller population of indigenous people.
